Brief Description of Agency or Firm's Mission:
The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program. This solicitation features two mechanisms for support of student research: (1) REU Sites are based on independent proposals to initiate and conduct projects that engage a number of students in research. REU Sites may be based in a single discipline or academic department, or on interdisciplinary or multi-department research opportunities with a coherent intellectual theme. Proposals with an international dimension are welcome. A partnership with the Department of Defense supports REU Sites in DoD-relevant research areas. (2) REU Supplements may be requested for ongoing NSF-funded research projects or may be included as a component of proposals for new or renewal NSF grants or cooperative agreements.
Describe the value of the proposed Internship to the Agency/Firm:
Describe the value of the proposed Internship to the Intern:

Job Description (should include: hours of work, job responsibilities, reporting structure -- chain of command, a description of the intern's "typical" day):
This is a two-step application process. Please submit a Bulldogs application, then submit an application on the JILA website: http://www.colorado.edu/physics/Web/reu/reu_app2012.html
During the summer, the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, funded through the National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates program, at JILA and the Department of Physics at the University of Colorado, gives undergraduates the opportunity to do cutting-edge research outside the classroom.
Research opportunities exist in the following areas:
• Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics
• Biophysics
• Condensed Matter Physics
• Elementary Particle Physics
• Geophysics
• Physics Education Research
• Plasma Physics
Each student is placed in an active research group, which typically consists of a professor, postdocs, and graduate students. Students are given the opportunity to experience a real-life research environment and to contribute to ongoing research projects.
Management Goals: (should include: role of supervisor, frequency of intermediate reviews, expectations of intern, and an explanation of how the intern fits into the organization's goals -- please indicate whether supervisor works full-time or part-time):
Special Job Requirements (i.e. transportation, language, technical or other skills):
Students receive a stipend of $5,000, sustenance of $2,000, and travel. The intern can pay $1500 to live with the other interns at the Inn at Auraria or secure independent housing in Boulder. Interns can participate in the weekly dinners and talks by leading Denverites, go on the weekend fun trips for BITR/CLIMB interns, and meet with a BITR/CLIMB appointed mentor. BITR/CLIMB hopes JILA Interns will choose to contact and join the separate and beneficial CLIMB program
