Brief Description of Agency or Firm's Mission:
Formed in December 2006, United Launch Alliance (ULA) is a 50-50 joint venture owned by Lockheed Martin and The Boeing Company. ULA brings together two of the launch industry’s most experienced and successful teams – Atlas and Delta – to provide reliable, cost-efficient space launch services for the U.S. government. U.S. government launch customers include the Department of Defense, NASA, the National Reconnaissance Office and other organizations.
Atlas and Delta expendable launch vehicles have supported America’s presence in space for more than 50 years, carrying a variety of payloads including weather, telecommunications and national security satellites that protect and improve life on Earth, as well as deep space and interplanetary exploration missions that further our knowledge of the universe.
ULA program management, engineering, test and mission support functions are headquartered in Denver, Colo. Manufacturing, assembly and integration operations are located at Decatur, Ala., Denver, Colo., Harlingen, Tex., and San Diego, Calif. Launch operations are located at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., and at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.

ntern positions offer a variety of opportunities including basic engineering/computer science tasks related to design, analysis, test, integration and systems engineering. Opportunities can vary from performing analysis on existing flight software, assisting in the design and development of future hardware/software, performing analysis for both completed and future launches, test, systems engineering, mission integration, quality assurance, engineering configuration management, launch operations and production operations; may involve integration and testing of software products into flight hardware. Activities can include but not limited to data analysis, analysis methodology improvement projects, software improvement projects, trade studies, design for manufacturer studies, creating or modifying tool designs, processing cause and corrective actions for non-conformances, maintain production work instructions, supplier management, and component or integrated systems test.
Interns will typically support one or more experienced engineers in performance of assignments, spend time shadowing actual operations, and have unique assignments that support larger projects as well as experience the day-to-day workings of engineering. Interns may perform and/or participate in additional activities/events which help them build a strong network within the ULA community and with fellow interns.

Special Job Requirements (i.e. transportation, language, technical or other skills):
Pursuing a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree in Computer Science or Management Information Systems.
Must complete their junior college class year by summer 2012 and be enrolled as a full time student during the fall 2013.
Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Power Point and Excel)
Must have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.90 or greater on a 4.00 scale in their current college degree program (no rounding). ULA only considers the cumulative GPA listed on the unofficial/official transcript provided by the institution that the candidate currently attends.
Must be 18 years of age by the start of a summer 2012 internship assignment.
Must be able to complete a minimum of a 10 week summer assignment in 2012. Internships will start no earlier than May 29 and no later than June 25, 2012.
External Preferred Qualifications
a JUNIOR pursuing a Computer Science/Management Information Systems degree.
Interested in pursuing a long-term career in the launch industry.
Current or previous experience using technical knowledge and skills.
Experience working independently and in a team environment.
Experience with Microsoft Office.
Effective communication skills (verbal and written; including presentations skills).
Previous internship experience in an Aerospace company.
Computer Programming experience in JAVA, C (C, C++, or C#), Eclipse, and Oracle.
Experience and ability in solving basic, non-critical engineering problems using proven methods and formulas, existing design and test information, design handbooks and verbal instructions.
Involvement and completion of technical class projects.
Basic understanding of problem definition and issue resolution process steps
Transportation: Students are responsible for coordinating their own transportation to and from the workplace.
Additional Information:
A taxable housing/transportation stipend may be provided to obtain housing near the ULA work location if the successful candidate's permanent home address and current college address are both greater than 50 miles from the assigned ULA work location. Students wishing to participate in Bulldogs housing will be required to pay a housing fee, payable at the beginning of the summer, unless specific arrangements have been made with the program.
