Brief Description of Agency or Firm's Mission:
The C. E. and S. Foundation, Inc., a private family foundation, identifies, funds, and nurtures projects and organizations in the fields of higher education, international cooperation, and improvements to the urban environment that meaningfully enhance people’s lives. The Foundation is also dedicated to fostering philanthropic spirit and nonprofit management expertise.
Describe the value of the proposed Internship to the Agency/Firm:
The C.E. and S. Foundation is managed by a staff of three – each member bringing a unique set of experience and expertise to the table. Our work is made richer with the addition of the new perspectives, and we look to our interns to share their creativity, energy and insights openly. C.E. and S. summer interns not only bring new perspectives to our work, but they also help us fulfill our mission in real hands-on ways. Interns are assigned responsibilities that are part of the grant-making process to help build understanding of the field, as well as special projects that add great value to our work but might not otherwise benefit from dedicated attention.
Describe the value of the proposed Internship to the Intern:
The C. E. and S. Foundation has designed this internship position to give our intern a valuable and fulfilling experience. The members of our team are very accessible and interested in helping our intern develop a solid foundational understanding of the fields of philanthropy and nonprofit management. Our intern will learn about the nonprofit sector from the perspectives of both grant-makers and grant-seekers. In many ways, this opportunity is one our intern can shape to suit his or her interests by choosing to engage with specific projects that suit his or her interests.
Job Description (should include: hours of work, job responsibilities, reporting structure -- chain of command, a description of the intern's "typical" day):
This year, the C.E. and S. Foundation has developed a collaborative project with another local foundation for our intern to undertake.
Four years ago, a local foundation developed a fellows program to build leadership capability and to invest in the intellectual capital of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The fellowship is an individualized development program that provides a diverse group of students the opportunity to build leadership skills through academic enrichment, expanded opportunity and personal accountability.
Next year, the first class of fellows will graduate from the program, creating the need for an alumni society. We are looking for an intern to help with the groundwork for the development of that society. The intern will study best practices in alumni engagement; assist with the development of a database infrastructure so that the foundation can follow the progress of its graduates over time; and develop a recommendation for program structure and components that will create and maintain a tight network of fellowship graduates. The intern may also assist with the planning of an orientation event for new fellows and families..
We’re looking for someone who is creative and analytical. Someone who is interested in program design and implementation, has an understanding of valuable data versus noise, and who is drawn to the idea of creating programs that foster a sense of community and engagement. Someone who will research existing best practices and synthesize those to recommend a program structure.
The intern’s immediate supervisor is the Foundation’s program officer. But with an office the size of ours, there is regular collaboration with our executive director and accounting assistant, as well as members of the local foundation and non-profit communities. The intern position is full-time, 5 days per week (40 hours) and most work days will be 8:30am – 5:30pm.
In addition, this year’s intern will have the opportunity for participating in day-to-day grant-making activities such as drafting letters and memoranda and conducting ad-hoc and on-going research. Additional responsibilities and opportunities are possible based on the intern’s individual interests.
Management Goals: (should include: role of supervisor, frequency of intermediate reviews, expectations of intern, and an explanation of how the intern fits into the organization's goals -- please indicate whether supervisor works full-time or part-time):
As the immediate supervisor, the program officer will provide leadership to our intern, with the understanding that the intern will often work in an independent and self-directed manner. Our intern can expect to meet regularly with the program officer to discuss progress, pose questions, address challenges, and navigate the complexities of establishing his or her own professional brand – but never to be micromanaged.
Of course, all members of the C.E. and S. Foundation are interested in the intern’s development and success and are available to coach, mentor and guide.
Expectations of the intern include ability and willingness to perform the duties of each assignment and to learn more about the nonprofit sector, especially the field of private foundations. The intern will be encouraged to think creatively and to make suggestions. The Foundation seeks motivated interns who have experience or interest in the fields of philanthropy and/or nonprofit management.
Special Job Requirements (i.e. transportation, language, technical or other skills):
The successful intern will be highly motivated, effective at working independently as well as in small teams, and detail oriented while gifted at appreciating the big picture. Strong writing, communications, and analytical skills are essential, and writing samples may be requested by the Foundation during the interview process. Given the independence associated with this role, candidates with strong attention to detail and organizational and time management skills are preferred. In addition, the intern should be an imaginative and energetic thinker who enjoys creative activities. Flexibility and organization are also key skills, as the size of our office creates an all-hands-on-deck team environment. Computer literacy is a must.
Additional Information:
Transportation: Students are responsible for coordinating their own transportation to and from the workplace.
International Students: You will need to apply for permission from immigration to work off campus (Optional Practical Training) to engage in a BAA internship. OPT applications can take up to three months for immigration to process, so advance planning is required. These applications must be submitted through the Office of International Students and Scholars. For full information on the OPT application process go to http://www.yale.edu/oiss/immigration/common/f1students/opt.html or contact monica.weeks@yale.edu.
