Brief Description of Agency or Firm's Mission:
Our mission:
The Aspire Program is designed: 1) to increase a girl’s ability to make smart choices and assume leadership roles and to encourage young women to pursue higher education, and 2) to produce thoughtful educators and advocates for education by creating a professional immersion experience in the art and science of teaching for highly talented college and high school students.
Describe the value of the proposed Internship to the Agency/Firm:
College students form the backbone of the summer program. Students from several of the nation's leading colleges and universities, including Brown, Columbia, Denison, Harvard, Middlebury, Northwestern, Princeton, Spelman, and Yale have chosen to teach at Aspire. One of Aspire’s missions is to create a professional immersion experience in teaching for aspiring educators. Our hope is that Aspire apprentices will develop a keen sense of the components of a quality education, and become advocates for schools and students wherever they go.
Describe the value of the proposed Internship to the Intern:
Teaching at Aspire, you’ll have
---- the opportunity to change the futures of a motivated, bright group of girls who may be limited in opportunity because of low family income or lack of exposure to higher education
----hands-on teaching experience in the classroom with the guidance and support of a passionate, experienced teachers
----the chance to design and teach a workshop that sparks a new passion in a middle school student
---and the opportunity to become part of a thoughtful, inspiring team of experienced teachers, college and high school students.
Job Description (should include: hours of work, job responsibilities, reporting structure -- chain of command, a description of the intern's "typical" day):
College students are responsible for implementing creative, engaging classes that support the academic needs of middle school girls. They plan and teach three sections of an academic class (in Math, Science, Language Arts, or Social Studies). Apprentice Teachers fulfill all responsibilities associated with teaching classes, including lesson planning and implementation, and student assessment (including written comments about student growth). Apprentice Teachers are supported by a team of passionate and experienced teachers. Apprentice Teachers share their expertise and personal interests in afternoon workshops of their own design. These workshops broaden the exposure of our students by covering a wide range of topics not often covered in middle schools (anything from dance to mock trial, from ultimate Frisbee to Lego robotics). All Apprentice Teachers are required to attend Teacher Orientation and Program Evaluation days as these are critical training and team building periods. Attendance at a few special events outside of the school day (Family Night and Closing Ceremony, for example) is expected. Additionally, college students attend regular staff meetings regarding teaching, program details, and student progress throughout the summer.
