Brief Description of Agency or Firm's Mission:
The REACH Program is a summer academic enrichment program at University School in Hunting Valley, Ohio. The mission of the program is to help African American middle school boys of promise from Greater Cleveland become lifelong learners who will contribute productively to the world they inherit and to recruit and influence college undergraduates, with an emphasis on minorities, to choose a career in education as a result of their experiences teaching in the REACH Program.



Additional company information:

University School is set on two campus locations, one in Hunting Valley, Ohio and the other in Shaker Heights, Ohio. The REACH Program for summer 2012 will be hosted at the Shaker Heights Campus (20701 Brantley Road, Shaker Heights, OH 44122). Most college students drive themselves to work or carpool. The Shaker Heights Campus is located within walking distance from various modes of public transportation.





Describe the value of the proposed Internship to the Agency/Firm:
Key to the mission of the REACH Program is encouraging college students-especially African American students, who are currently underrepresented in the field of education-to consider teaching as a career and/or be an advocate for education regardless of their profession.





Describe the value of the proposed Internship to the Intern:
Teaching at REACH provides college students with: 1) Exposure to the joys and challenges of a career in education. 2) Authentic classroom experience 3) The opportunity to design your own curriculum 4) The chance to be a mentor and a role model to African American boys

Description:

The REACH Program seeks qualified college students who can assist mentor faculty in teaching core classes in English, Math or Science. College students also teach elective courses of their own design and serve as supervisors for various recreational activities.



Expected daily work hours

8:00 am-3:00 pm; Monday, June 18-Friday, July 20, 2012



Expected weekend work hours

Opening Faculty Meetings-Schedule TBD; New Student Orientation-Saturday, June 16, 2012



How much will I get paid?

$2,000.00



What is a typical day like?

College faculty members typically begin their day at 8:15 a.m. Throughout the morning, they assist their appointed mentor teacher in core classes. In the afternoon, college students instruct two 45 minute elective classes and supervise a specific recreation activity. The day concludes around 3:00 p.m.

Although it is not necessary for applicants to have prior teaching experience, we are seeking bright and energetic college students who are able to work effectively with young people under the guidance of experienced teachers. College students are selected for the program on the basis of their intellectual ability, their interest in teaching and their willingness to accept responsibility.

Bulldogs on the Cuyahoga is open to current Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors only. Current Freshmen are not eligible to apply.



Please Note: If you accept this opportunity you will be required to submit a $100 non-refundable housing deposit/program fee to defray the cost of your participation in the program. The amount will be due prior to arriving in Cleveland.



Transportation: Students are responsible for coordinating their own transportation to and from the workplace.
