Brief Description of Agency or Firm's Mission:
The mission of Breakthrough Santa Fe is to identify motivated under-served public middle school students and prepare them to thrive in academically challenging high school programs on a path towards college. In addition, we provide high school and college age young adults with a rewarding experience as teachers and mentors. Breakthrough changes lives for both our teachers and students. Teaching at Breakthrough is often described as the most challenging and fulfilling experiences our teachers have ever had. For our students, the summer program is the crucial and exciting first step on their paths to college.

Describe the value of the proposed Internship to the Agency/Firm:
Sixteen high school and college age students teach and mentor 55 high-achieving underserved middle school students. Each instructor will teach a core academic class and an elective (with no more than seven students per class), write lesson plans, advise students, participate on a committee, and fulfill other duties as needed. Close relationships are formed and both students and teachers grow as a result of their experiences working with one another. Summer teachers help our students learn to be dedicated students who understand that their futures are limitless.

In addition, we hire three teachers to teach in our College Bound program. The program offers fun and informative one- and two-week sessions for each grade 9 – 12 focused on college prep and community building. College Bound teachers will teach one of the following: ACT Prep, Writing, or College Prep. Additionally during College Bound, teachers and students tour college campuses, engage in college and career panels, team building activities that help our older students stay connected with the program and with each other. If you are interested in teaching College Bound, note your interest in your application!

Describe the value of the proposed Internship to the Intern:
Teachers learn what it means to give of one self. Everything we do at Breakthrough is for the betterment of our students. "The kids come first," is our mantra and our teaching staff learn the importance of dedication, team work, and self-sacrifice. Teachers also work closely with professional mentor teachers to learn the craft of teaching and successfully implement a curriculum in math, science, history, or English.

Over 65% of former Breakthrough teachers have pursued careers in education and have cited the influence that the program had on their decisions. Breakthrough Collaborative has a special relationships with post-graduate education programs including Teach for America, MATCH, and others.

8 Weeks, June 7-August 3, 2012; 5 days a week- 7:30 to 6:00 pm (average: not including lesson plan development and correcting papers, etc.)

Teachers are placed in a department with a mentor teacher (professional teacher- their direct supervisor)

Teachers are responsible for lesson plan development and implementation, classroom management, assigned to a committee, attend to 3 or 4 student advisees, event planning, oversight of meetings and events. Extensive training and support is provided for each teacher.

We generally describe the summer program as 180 school days wrapped in a six-week academic program.

Management Goals: (should include: role of supervisor, frequency of intermediate reviews, expectations of intern, and an explanation of how the intern fits into the organization's goals -- please indicate whether supervisor works full-time or part-time):
Teachers will be observed several times during the course of the summer. At least 2 times during the first 3 weeks and at least once each week for the remaining of the summer. Teachers and mentors will meet daily in department meetings and schedule one-on-one conferences after an observation. Teachers will work from a rubric to measure their success in the classrooms. Lesson plan templates and skill objectives will provide teachers an opportunity to concentrate on making their lessons interactive and engaging. Mentor teachers will be present during the mornings and site directors are here all day. There is ample opportunity for growth and self-discovery and many of the teachers return for a second summer the following year.

Special Job Requirements (i.e. transportation, language, technical or other skills):
Spanish fluency a plus, but not required.

Breakthrough Santa Fe also provides housing for out of town teachers. If interns plan to live in Bulldog Housing, a car will be necessary to drive to Santa Fe Preparatory School, where Breakthrough is housed.
