The mission of Outside magazine is to inspire active participation in the world outside through award-winning coverage of the sports, people, places, adventure, discoveries, health and fitness, gear and apparel, trends and events that make up an active lifestyle.
Description of Company: With an audience of more than 2.3 million readers worldwide, Outside—America's leading active-lifestyle and adventure-travel magazine—is a perennial recipient of the Society of Publication Design awards. Our Creative Director Hannah McCaughey comes from a distinguished design background with experience at publications like Esquire and Rolling Stone.

Job Description (should include: hours of work, job responsibilities, reporting structure -- chain of command, a description of the intern's "typical" day):
The hours of work are from 10am until 6pm, Monday-Friday. Usually an intern will work anywhere from 35-40 hours a week.
Typically, our internships are three to four months long, depending on the circumstances. Duties include assisting the design team in the production of three monthly issues of the magazine with additional responsibilities as your skills develop. Although the position usually lasts three months, there is potential to stay on for an extra month.
The intern will report to the Art Director.
Management Goals: (should include: role of supervisor, frequency of intermediate reviews, expectations of intern, and an explanation of how the intern fits into the organization's goals -- please indicate whether supervisor works full-time or part-time):
The supervisors both train the intern and review their work on a daily basis. Supervisors both work full-time.
The intern is treated as an employee of the company and is counted on as a valuable member of the design team.
Special Job Requirements (i.e. transportation, language, technical or other skills):
Preferred Major: Graphic Design
We prefer a candidate with either prior magazine design experience or a definite passion for magazine design with some design experience.
You should know how to use Indesign(CS5) and Photoshop (knowledge of K4 and Illustrator is a plus).

The most promising candidates will then be asked to complete a design test, which consists of taking a feature opener from a printed issue of Outside and redesigning it with your own conceptual ideas.
